Leader of the Council
Councillor for Glebe Ward and Leader, City of Lincoln Council
Ric Metcalfe has been on the City Council since 1982. He has represented Glebe Ward and its predecessor wards for the whole of that time.
He served as Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee from 1984 and was Deputy Leader of the Council from 1987 to 1999, and then Leader of the Council until 2007, returning to that role when Labour regained control of the Council in May 2011.
Ric has a professional background in Social Work, working as a practitioner, manager and teaching social work in Higher Education. He worked for Lincolnshire County Council Social Services Department as a training officer and later as Human Resource Manager retiring in 2002. He currently works part-time at Lincoln University teaching Social Policy to undergraduates.
Ric has a well-deserved reputation as a hard-working ward councillor, having run a weekly surgery in the ward for many years and works closely with people in the area he represents.
Ric says, “It’s been a pleasure and a privilege representing the people of Glebe. There is a great deal of community spirit in the two main communities within the ward, with some great people willing to contribute to improving the area. There are still plenty of issues to address, especially developing facilities for children and young people and reducing some of the disadvantages experienced by some people in the ward.”
Ric has a very long history as a peace activist and community activist and is a long-standing and active trade union member.
On the left of the Labour Party, Ric has a real passion for inequality and social justice and has pushed for the Council to give the issue of dealing with poverty & disadvantage a high priority. He is passionate about public sector housing and has argued long and hard for the resumption of building council houses.
With his earlier environmental background, he is keen to see the Labour-run Council embrace the Climate Change agenda and getting the Council to significantly reduce its own carbon footprint to set an example for other organisations.
When not helping to run the Council or campaigning politically, he enjoys allotment gardening, playing the jazz trumpet and enjoying visiting his two grandchildren in Brighton.
Glebe ward councillors hold weekly ward surgeries for residents in Glebe Ward on Wednesdays at St Giles Community Centre Swift Gardens, Lincoln LN2 4ND from 14:30 to 16:00. No appointment is necessary.
Lincoln City Councillors Jackie Kirk, Ric Metcalfe and Patrick Vaughan are also available between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on the second and last Saturday of every month at the Nettleham Road ASDA to discuss any Council problems you may have.
